Question:

My dear husband passed away four years ago and I am in communication with his spirit. He gives me signs daily and I do see him. This is not with any help from anyone else. I do not need a medium. I am a strong believer of the afterlife. I feel I have been truly blessed by my experience and thank God every day. Would like to hear your comments on this.

Answer:

This will no doubt come as a huge shock to you, but I can do no more than give you what the Bible says.  According to the Word of God the dead are asleep, they know nothing and are not aware of anything happening on earth, until they are awoken in the resurrection.  Here are only a portion of the texts that support this fact.

Ecclesiastes 9: 5 For the living know that they will die; but the dead know nothing,

And they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten.

6 Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished;  Nevermore will they have a share in anything done under the sun.

10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.

Psalm 13:3   Consider and hear me, O LORD my God; enlighten my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;

John 11: 11 These things He said, and after that He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.”

12 Then His disciples said, “Lord, if he sleeps he will get well.”13 However, Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about taking rest in sleep. 14 Then Jesus said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead.

Acts 2: 29 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.

34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself:

‘ The LORD said to my Lord,“ Sit at My right hand,

Job 14: 12 So man lies down and does not rise. Till the heavens are no more, they will not awake nor be roused from their sleep.

21 His sons come to honor, and he does not know itThey are brought low, and he does not perceive it.

John 5: 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

Isaiah 57: (NIV) 1 The righteous perish, and no one ponders it in his heart; devout men are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil. 2Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest as they lie in death.

1 Corinthians 15: 51 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

1 Thessalonians 4: 13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.

15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.  18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.

I’m sure you’d agree that the Bible is unanimous about the dead being asleep until God wakes them up again, and there is no activity from the dead.  In fact the Bible goes even further and commands everyone that there should be no attempt at communicating with the dead at all.  Look at the following passages.

Leviticus 19:31   ‘Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.

Deuteronomy 18: 10 There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, 11 or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead12 For all who do these things are an abomination to the LORD, and because of these abominations the LORD your God drives them out from before you. 13 You shall be blameless before the LORD your God. 14 For these nations which you will dispossess listened to soothsayers and diviners; but as for you, the LORD your God has not appointed such for you.

Leviticus 20: 6 ‘And the person who turns to mediums and familiar spirits, to prostitute himself with them, I will set My face against that person and cut him off from his people.  7 Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am the LORD your God.

27 ‘A man or a woman who is a medium, or who has familiar spirits, shall surely be put to death; they shall stone them with stones. Their blood shall be upon them.’”

2 Kings 21: 6     Also he made his son pass through the fire, practiced soothsay-ing, used witchcraft, and consulted spiritists and mediums. He did much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke Him to anger.

Then who is it that you are communicating with, if it is not your dead husband?  And what is the reason you are receiving these “visits from the dead”? This is the weird part!  If there are no spirits from the dead around us, then the answer is that these are evil spirits or demons, masquerading as our dead loved ones.  This is all part of a devilish deception, to try and turn us away from God.  Sometimes these spirits ask that their loved ones commit suicide so that they may “be united again”.

2 Corinthians 11: 14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.

Revelation 16: 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons, performing signswhich go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

When Jesus was questioned about the end times and His second coming, His first words were about deception, and He reiterated it twice again in His discourse.  Satan is out to deceive as many as possible, and nowhere is it easier that when dead loved ones suddenly appear and communicate with us.  This is a world-wide phenomenon with a huge following, as is evidenced by the many TV programmes on the subject.  But popular or not, it is utterly unbiblical, and God calls it an abomination.

Matthew 24: 3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”

4 And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you.

11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many.

23 “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. 24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

There are now two ways you can go.  Either you stick to the Word of God and believe what He has to say on the state of the dead, or you go on believing as you do now and fall for Satan’s lie.  Many God-fearing Christians believe as you do at present, because they have never studied this for themselves and are therefore targets of deception.  But if you do study this theme in the Bible, there is only one conclusion you can reach, and that is that the dead are truly dead, which means that they are in a deep, unconscious sleep until God awakes them at the end of time.  Only God and His angels, and the devil and his demons are around in the spirit world, and as God is fully against any type of communication with the dead, it can only be Satan.  I am praying for you as you study this topic for yourself.  If you decide to believe what God says, you will have to confront this apparition in the form of your husband, and command it in the name of Jesus Christ, never to appear again.  That will be the end of it, as has been witnessed many times before. God bless as you follow His leading!
