Question:

My friend is cutting herself constantly and I don’t know how to help her

Answer:

Cutting normally occurs when someone has great internal emotional pain, and the person is  trying to drive the internal pain away by cutting, and unfortunately that feeling of pain and bleeding can become addictive. If the cutting occurs in a visible place on the body, it can be a cry for help, for it is mostly done in places we cannot see. So your friend is obviously crying out for help, and that can usually only be given by professionals that deal with this kind of behaviour.

Continue to be a friend but do be aware that emotionally she could become quite dependent on you and that is not good either – she is not your responsibility but obviously needs people to help her.  Encourage her to talk to someone who understands what she is going through and knows how to help her.

One of my favourite texts is 2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. Tell her to talk to God, He knows better than anyone what is happening in her life.

Here are some Bible promises for her to claim.

1 John 4:8   He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

John 3:16   For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

John 17:23 (NLT)    I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.”

Jeremiah 31:3   The Lord has appeared of old to me, saying: “Yes, I have loved you with an

everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.”

Hebrews 13:5     For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Matthew 19:26   But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Jeremiah 29:11   “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you”, says the LORD, “thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

1 Timothy 2     For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviorwho desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

2 Peter 3:9   The Lord is … not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

Galatians 2:6   … God shows personal favoritism to no man …

John 3     16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

2 Corinthians 5:17   Therefore, if anyone is in Christ (in relationship with Christ), he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

I trust that this makes sense to you. God bless!
