Question:

I need some advice. My mom is always Mad with me. I stay calm and try to be reasonable. But she won’t listen to me. Another thing is that I did not do anything wrong. I just try to be the perfect son. I don’t know what to do anymore. Does the Bible mention anything about this?

Answer:

Exodus 20:12   Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.”

Ephesians 6     Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right“Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”

The Bible has nothing to say about your situation, just the commands to honour and obey our parents. Are you sure that you are “the perfect son”? Remember, we are all sinners, and therefore nobody is perfect, and sometimes we think that we are right, when actually we are totally wrong. Just make sure that you really do love, honour and obey your mom.

OK, so let’s assume you are really without fault, why would your mom suddenly become unreasonable? Is she under a lot of stress? Are there money problems? Does she have any medical problems? Are there relationship problems? Is she perhaps depressed? Any or a combination of these, can trigger behaviour that you see as unreasonable, but it may be just a cry for help. Do you help her as much as you can around the house, or does she do everything for you? Remember, there is always a reason for a change in behaviour, and you may not be aware of what it is.

I suggest that you do your best to help your mom in any way possible; don’t get upset about “unreasonable” behaviour, but rather try to find out what the problem is. It may be something that you can help with, but it may also be something that you can do nothing about, except pray that God will help to sort out the problem. You may not be able to help her, but with God nothing is impossible.

Philippians 4     Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Give your problems, and your mom’s, to God, and ask Him to sort them out. God bless!
