Question:

Why does the Bible suggest us not to wear jewellery?

Answer:

When you are a Christian, you are supposed to give your life to God completely, and allow Him to begin changing you into His image. You humble yourself before Him, which means that you let His will be done in your life, and not your own. You reflect Him, not your own beauty and assets. You want to let Him be seen by others, not yourself. Let’s have a look at some passages, which tell us that it is not the outward show that is important, but what the heart is like.

Proverbs 31     30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised31 Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates.

1 Peter 3     Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.

1 Timothy 2     I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.

1 Samuel 16:7   But the Lord said to Samuel, “… For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

No-one is saying that you must do this or that, you have to decide for yourself. God has given every one of us the power of free choice, and we have to choose daily how we want to behave; how we want people to view us. We are to reflect Christ to others in everything we are; how we speak, act, dress, etc. Use God’s Word to make your decision.

1 Corinthians 10:31   Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

There you have it. Your choice. Are you wearing jewelry to the glory of God, or yourself? God bless as you study it!
