Question:

Regarding the commandment though shalt not kill. I have always wondered, if it comes down to protecting my family or I, would that be breaking God’s commandment since it is clear he commands you not to kill?

Answer:

The Bible is very clear that we are talking about premeditated murder in the Ten Commandments, and not accidental killing or defending yourself and your family.

Exodus 20:13   “You shall not murder.”  AMP  “You shall not commit murder (unjustified, deliberate homicide).

Exodus 21     12 “He who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death.

13 However, if he did not lie in wait, but God delivered him into his hand, then I will appoint for you a place where he may flee.

14 But if a man acts with premeditation against his neighbor, to kill him by treachery, you shall take him from My altar, that he may die.”

Therefore, if a man defends himself or others against attack, and his attacker dies, the man is not guilty of murder. I trust that this makes sense. God bless!

Exodus 21:13

However, if he did not lie in wait, but God delivered him into his hand, then I will appoint for you a place where he may flee.
