Question:

Is any form of talking about people or what they have done gossip, or is it just when it is with the intention to damage their reputation?

Answer:

The Bible tells us that we are all sinners, born into a sinful world. And because we are all sinners, it is very easy for us to spot each person’s sins, and to start talking about the problem. This usually happens so that we can feel better about ourselves, as we then think that we are better than the ones we’re talking about. But this is judging others, which the Bible totally condemns.

Romans 3:23   for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God

Matthew 7    Judge not, that you be not judgedFor with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

So then, what should we do when we see each other’s sinful actions? Well, the first thing is not to think that we are better than them. We are all in the same boat, sinners in need of a Saviour, so nobody is better than anybody else. Secondly, instead of gossiping about someone’s problems, rather pray that God will help them to overcome the problems, so that they will be with us in heaven someday. And when we pray for someone’s salvation, we know that we are 100% in God’s will, because God wants each one of us to be saved, and to spend eternity with Him.

Acts 10:34   Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality …”

James 5:16   Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

1 Timothy 2     For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviorwho desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

2 Peter 3:9   The Lord is … not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

The best way to help people that you see are caught up in some sin, is to pray for them, show them a good example from your own life, and to love them, as Jesus loves us. Talking about another’s sins, whatever your intentions, is not the way to go.

John 15:12   This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

I hope that this makes sense to you. God bless!
