Question:

Calvinists say that The Book of Life holds The Names of The Elect, is that true?

Answer:

Let me show you what the Bible has to say about the Book of Life.

Exodus 32   32 Yet now, if You will forgive their sin—but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written.” 33 And the Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book.”

Psalm 69:28   Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.

Philippians 4:3   And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life.

Revelation 3:5   He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot

out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.

Revelation 13:8   … written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of

the world.

Revelation 20:12   And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.

Revelation 21:27   But there shall by no means enter it (The New Jerusalem) anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

Revelation 22     18 … “If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from

the things which are written in this book.”

When we look at all of these passages, it seems that everyone who ever called themselves Christians, get their names entered in the Book of Life. But if we do not stay faithful to God, names can be blotted out of the Book. So having a name in the Book of Life does not mean that it will necessarily stay there, it depends on our relationship with God, in other words our choices will determine whether our names stay in it, or is blotted out of it. But, as the passage below says, those whose names are in the Book of Life when Jesus returns, will be delivered, and spend eternity with God. Only those with their names in the Book, will enter the New Jerusalem in heaven.

Daniel 12:1   … And at that time your people shall be delivered, every one who is found written in the book.

I trust that this makes sense to you. God bless!
