Question:

How do I become a successful evangelist? I ask this because when I’m done with school, I want to be able to preach the gospel properly.

Answer:

An evangelist is “a person who seeks to convert others to the Christian faith, especially by public preaching”, according to an online dictionary. And to convert others to the Christian faith, you have to know the God of the Christian faith. To become a successful evangelist, you have to start, and grow, a close personal relationship with God, and really get to know Him. And then, ask Him whether He wants you to be an evangelist for Him. Because you will only be successful, if God wants you as an evangelist, and gives you exactly what you need to be successful. So, at this point, you are putting the cart before the horse, unless God has already spoken to you, and told you to become an evangelist for Him. But if God has asked you, you wouldn’t be asking me that question, you would be asking Him.

Being a speaker for God, whether prophet, pastor or evangelist, only happens when God calls you into His service. And when He calls you, He equips you fully for the work that He wants you to do. You don’t have to wonder about how to prepare, God will tell you when He wants you, where He wants you, and what to do. If you are not already in a personal relationship with God, and I mean spending quality time with Him every day, then that should be your starting point. Pray often, study the Bible every day, and ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit, to prepare you for service to God.

Here are the words of the apostle Paul to the young Timothy, a pastor who Paul trained and worked with.

1 Timothy 4     12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. 14 Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. 15 Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. 16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

Get as close to God as you possibly can, that is my advice to you. Really get to know Him. God bless!
