Question:

What did Jesus mean in Matthew 10:34?

Answer:

Matthew 10     34 Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword35 For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; 36 and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’”

If we look at the whole paragraph, it makes more sense. Jesus is saying that there is a great battle going on between Him and Satan. When someone in a household accepts Jesus into his/her life, and becomes a Christian, the devil will push the others in the family to oppose them, persecute them and make life miserable. Satan does not take it well, when someone who has always been on his side, suddenly changes and becomes a close personal friend of Jesus, and tries to influence others to do the same. Peace does not descend on the home, but instead “all hell breaks loose”, literally. But God is ready to intervene, and protect and lead the new convert, when God is chosen instead of the world.

I trust that this makes sense. God bless!
