Question:

What is the relationship between democracy & Christianity?
Is democracy compatible with the Bible/christian life or is it contradictory?

Answer:

Christianity is about joining God’s kingdom, becoming a citizen of heaven, and forgetting about earthly politics. On earth we live in democracies, earthly kingdoms, communist states or in dictatorships, and it should not change how we live our Christian lives. Jesus lived in a country that was controlled by the Romans, and Israelites had very little say about the politics in their own country. Yet Jesus went about His business without complaint, treating Israelite and Roman exactly the same. We should be the same, no matter what type of government we are part of.

Philippians 3     20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.

God’s ideal for Israel, was that they would be ruled by Him alone, not by a king, as all the nations around them were, or any other form of government, for that matter. But they chose to follow the way of their neighbouring countries, and asked for a king. A democracy means that everyone has a vote, and the majority decides what will happen, which laws will be made. As Christians, we have never been, and will never be, in the majority, and if we accept democracy Christianity, we may well have to accept a ruling which totally disagrees with the Bible. So in reality, for the Christian, any form of government will in the end be in conflict with Christianity, totally incompatible, and we have to prepare for it. It will come, as it came for Jesus, and all of His disciples.

I trust that this makes sense to you. God bless!
