Question:

What is this new name Jesus spoke of?

Answer:

There are three places in the Bible where God talks about giving a new name to those who are overcomers, the saved who will have eternal life with Him forever. Here are the passages that speak about it:

Isaiah 62:2   The Gentiles shall see your righteousness, and all kings your glory. You shall be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord will name.”

Revelation 2:17   “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.”’

Revelation 3:12   He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name.”

In the final passage it also says that the name of God will be written, as well as the name of God’s city. In the Bible there are many names that contain the name of God, such as:

Daniel – God is my judge

Gabriel – Man of God

Isaiah – God (Yahweh) is salvation

Jeremiah – God (Yahweh) establishes

In the Bible name stands for character. Maybe God will give us each a new name which reflects our character displayed in our relationship with Him here on earth, before we are changed and enter eternal life with Him.

1 Corinthians 15     51 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

Philippians 3     20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.

From the above passages we are told that when Jesus comes to earth again, to gather His faithful people, we shall all be changed by Him. Our bodies will be changed to be like His body, and we will be given immortality. We are now without sin, and it would be a good time for God to give us new names, which we will have for all eternity. Something to look forward to! God bless!
