Question:

How many thrones are there in the Bible?

Answer:

The New King James Version of the Bible mentions the word “throne” 168 times, but I’m sure that is not what you are asking.

The Bible mentions many earthly countries ruled by a king who sits on his throne. Examples are Egypt, Israel, Judah, Babylon, Persia, etc, etc. These were controlled by Jesus, the Son of God, as stated below, even though they were not aware of it.

Colossians 1:16   For by Him (Jesus) all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.

Daniel 2     20 Daniel answered and said:

“Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and might are His.
21 And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings;
He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.

But the Bible also talks about heavenly thrones. In the following passages we see God sitting on His throne in the heavenly temple

Psalm 11:4   The Lord is in His holy temple, the Lord’s throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.

Isaiah 6:1   In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple.

It is this throne that the angel Lucifer wanted for himself, as we see in the passage below. This caused him to become the devil, Satan, and to be cast from heaven.

Isaiah 14:13   For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north …”

The prophet Daniel wrote about a judgment scene in the heavenly courtroom, where more than one throne was placed, one of which was the throne of God the Father (the Ancient of Days).

Daniel 7     “I watched till thrones were put in place, and the Ancient of Days was seated;
His garment was white as snow, and the hair of His head was like pure wool.
His throne was a fiery flame, its wheels a burning fire;
10 A fiery stream issued and came forth from before Him. A thousand thousands ministered to Him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him. The court was seated, and the books were opened.

When Jesus ascended to heaven, He sat down at the right hand of the Father, on His throne. He says that one day the overcomers (the saved) will also sit with Him on His throne, as He sat on His Father’s throne.

Hebrews 12:2   looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Revelation 3:21   To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.”

And finally, we are given a glimpse of the heavenly throne room, but now there are not only God’s throne, but also 24 additional thrones around Him.

Revelation 4     Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throneAnd He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald.

Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads.

So as you can see, the Bible talks about a lot of earthly kingdoms with their rulers on their thrones, but they were there by the grace of God. It also talks about God in heaven on His throne, with elders sitting around the throne on 24 other thrones. Daniel, speaking prophetically, says that in the end all earthly kingdoms will be destroyed, leaving only God’s kingdom, and His throne, forever.

Daniel 2:44   And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.

“To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.”
